NIH-Funded Beta Cell Biology Consortium Aims To Eliminate Daily Insulin Injections, Finger Pricks

Saturday, September 18th, 2010

Oregon Health & Science University’s Markus Grompe, M.D., will lead a multi-center team of scientists selected to participate in the prestigious Beta Cell Biology Consortium (BCBC). Funded by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, the consortium’s long-term goal is to develop a cell-based therapy for insulin delivery in type 1 diabetes patients.

“The goal of our work is to produce abundant (more…)

Insulin Implicated In Cell Survival, Cell Metabolism And Stress Response

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

Researchers at the Buck Institute for Age Research have discovered a novel way in which insulin affects cell metabolism and cell survival. Surprisingly the insulin signaling pathway, which is involved in aging, diabetes and stress response, is active at a deeper level of cell activity than scientists expected. The study appears in the September 8th issue of Cell Metabolism.

Insulin is vitally involved in many (more…)

Court Curtails Stem Cell Research

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

A federal court decision has blocked a White House policy allowing more embryonic stem cell research, a change that research advocates say will postpone long-awaited breakthroughs.

The ruling by chief judge Royce Lamberth of Federal District Court for the District of Columbia, granted a temporary injunction rescinding a 2009 executive order by President Obama loosening constraints on the research, saying that the president had violated (more…)

Judge Blocks Embryonic Stem-Cell Research Funding

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

U.S. Chief District Court Judge Royce Lamberth in Washington ruled on August 23 that federal funding for embryonic stem–cell research was barred‚ according to a law prohibiting federal funds to be used for research in which an embryo is destroyed.

In his ruling‚ the judge rejected the Obama Administration’s argument that embryonic stem–cell research itself does not cause the destruction of embryos. Stem cells derived from embryos‚ (more…)

Adult Stem Cell Studies Abound for Heart, Diabetes, MS

Monday, August 2nd, 2010

In the past decade‚ scientists have made significant advances in medical treatments with the use of adult stem cells.

Research has included treatments for type 1 diabetes and heart attacks and a possibility for avoiding limb amputation. Dr. Richard Burt of Northwestern University reported that some diabetes patients experienced a “rebooting” of their immune system‚ allowing them to go without insulin for several years. The strategy (more…)
