Alzheimer’s Patients Could Benefit From Diabetes Drug

Metformin, a drug used in type 2-diabetes might have the potential to also act against Alzheimer’s disease. This has been shown in a study from scientists of the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE), the University of Dundee and the Max-Planck-Institute for Molecular Genetics. The researchers have found out that the diabetes drug metformin counteracts alterations of the cell structure protein Tau in mice nerve cells. (more…)

Combining Aerobic And Resistance Training Appears Helpful For Patients With Diabetes

Performing a combination of aerobic exercise and resistance training was associated with improved glycemic levels among patients with type 2 diabetes, compared to patients who did not exercise, according to a study in the November 24 issue of JAMA. The level of improvement was not seen among patients who performed either aerobic exercise or resistance training alone.

Diabetes or Prediabetes Predicted for Half of Americans by 2020

Unless significant changes are made‚ more than half of all Americans could have diabetes or prediabetes by the year 2020‚ according to a new analysis by UnitedHealth Group’s Center for Health Reform and Modernization.

Without a major change in health trends‚ this will have a cumulative cost of $3.35 trillion. Researchers also say that diabetes and prediabetes will account for an estimated 10 percent of total healthcare spending by (more…)

Phase III Trial of Diabetes-Halting Drug Progressing

Diamyd is forging ahead with a Phase III human trial of DiaPrevent, a potentially new treatment that can stop or slow the destruction of insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas of people with Type 1 diabetes.
