Grant To Study Face-To-Face Vs. Virtual Health Education For African-American Women With Type-2 Diabetes

BUSM Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs John Wiecha, MD, MPH, in the Department of Family Medicine, has received a National Institutes of Health (NIH) American Recovery & Reinvestment Act (ARRA) Challenge grant from the National Library of Medicine. The grant, valued at more than $950,000 will fund a study to provide health education to African-American women with type-2 diabetes.

Some Health Factors May Be Linked to Cognitive Problems for People With Type 2 Diabetes

A new study has found that older people with type 2 diabetes who also have high blood pressure‚ gait and balance problems‚ or consider their health to be poor may also be at higher risk for cognitive problems.

Pharmacists Take Larger Role on Health Team

Some health insurance plans and large employers have begun to pay pharmacists to monitor patients with chronic diseases‚ such as diabetes and heart disease‚ to ensure they take their prescribed medications.

In several independent drugstores‚ national chains‚ and supermarkets‚ pharmacists partner with doctors and nurses to care for patients with long–term illness. About half of U.S. patients do not take their medications as prescribed‚ (more…)

Utah Health Care Plans Partner For Diabetes – Utah Partnership Example Of Health System Reform For Nation

Utah’s innovative partnership between the Utah Department of Health (UDOH), eight major health care plans, and HealthInsight has received national attention. Dr. Ann Albright, Director of the Division of Diabetes Translation at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), highlighted the program during a recent address to the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Energy and Commerce, Subcommittee on Health.
