A new analysis of diabetes medications Avandia (rosiglitazone) and Actos (pioglitazone) revealed that the risk of heart attack and/or heart failure, or death were the same, approximately 4%. The study has been published in the latest issue of Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes , an American Heart Association journal.

Takeda Pharmacuetical Co. makes Actos, while GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) makes Avandia. (more…)

Study Links Actos to Heart Risks

New research asserts that pioglitazone (Actos) is as much a cardiovascular risk as rosiglitazone (Avandia).

Published in the journal Circulation‚ the study found that patients who take either drug are at 4 percent higher risk of heart attack‚ heart failure‚ or death. Rosiglitazone is currently under consideration to be taken off the market by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration‚ or to be placed under stronger prescribing restrictions. The (more…)

Heart Risks the Same With 2 Diabetes Drugs: Study

TUESDAY, Aug. 24 (HealthDay News) — A new study finds that the risk of heart attacks or death after taking the glucose-lowering diabetes drugs Avandia and Actos are about the same.

This is a direct contradiction to numerous other studies that found that the risk was elevated for Avandia (rosiglitazone) but not for Actos (pioglitazone). The findings are, however, in line with some other previous studies, further muddying (more…)

Adult Stem Cell Studies Abound for Heart, Diabetes, MS

In the past decade‚ scientists have made significant advances in medical treatments with the use of adult stem cells.

You don’t have to exercise to help your heart. Sure, exercise will probably make your heart last longer, but it’s not the only thing you can do to avoid the biggest complication of diabetes.
