Teen Almost Dies After Parents Deprive Her of Insulin: Police

An Indiana couple is facing serious charges after they repeatedly failed to give their 15-year old, Type 1 diabetic daughter insulin, nearly killing the girl, according to a recent article posted on the Fox 41 website.

Steve, the girl’s father, and Shelly Wilburn, the girl’s stepmother, were arrested on charges of neglecting a dependent and held on $75,000 bond. The teen has been hospitalized several times due to ketoacidosis, a (more…)

Survey: Diabetes Treated More With Pills and Less With Insulin

People with diabetes are taking more pills and less insulin for their disease‚ according to the results of a new government survey.

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality reports that the proportion of Americans with diabetes who took oral medications was 60 percent in 1997 and rose to 77 percent in 2007. From 1997 to 2007‚ the number of patients who reported taking insulin for diabetes fell from 38 percent to 24 percent. This (more…)

NIH-Funded Beta Cell Biology Consortium Aims To Eliminate Daily Insulin Injections, Finger Pricks

Oregon Health & Science University’s Markus Grompe, M.D., will lead a multi-center team of scientists selected to participate in the prestigious Beta Cell Biology Consortium (BCBC). Funded by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, the consortium’s long-term goal is to develop a cell-based therapy for insulin delivery in type 1 diabetes patients.

Some Long-Term Type 1 Diabetics Still Producing Insulin: Study

It’s long been thought that people with Type 1 Diabetes cease to produce any insulin after they’ve had the disease for a while. However, new research suggests that notion is a myth, according to an article from Diabetes News.

The study examined people who have been awarded the Joslin Diabetes Center’s “50-Year Medal,” which is given to people that have had Type 1 diabetes for 50 years or more. Slightly more than two-thirds (more…)

Insulin Implicated In Cell Survival, Cell Metabolism And Stress Response

Researchers at the Buck Institute for Age Research have discovered a novel way in which insulin affects cell metabolism and cell survival. Surprisingly the insulin signaling pathway, which is involved in aging, diabetes and stress response, is active at a deeper level of cell activity than scientists expected. The study appears in the September 8th issue of Cell Metabolism.
