Immune System Genes Show Links to Type 1 Diabetes

WEDNESDAY, Sept. 8 (HealthDay News) — The exact cause of type 1 diabetes is still unknown, but international researchers have found a link between the blood sugar disorder and a network of immune system genes.

Study Links Actos to Heart Risks

New research asserts that pioglitazone (Actos) is as much a cardiovascular risk as rosiglitazone (Avandia).

Published in the journal Circulation‚ the study found that patients who take either drug are at 4 percent higher risk of heart attack‚ heart failure‚ or death. Rosiglitazone is currently under consideration to be taken off the market by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration‚ or to be placed under stronger prescribing restrictions. The (more…)

More Evidence Links Fractures to Diabetes Drugs

A new study has found that popular diabetes drugs rosiglitazone (Avandia) and pioglitazone (Actos) increase the risk of fracture in older women. 

Researchers, writing in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, looked at a large study known as TRIAD to identify 786 cases of fractures and compare them to 2,657 patients who had diabetes but no fracture history.  Out of the overall group, 54 patients were women under age 50, 457 (more…)
