FDA Reviewing Preliminary Safety Information On Actos (pioglitazone)

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced it has begun a safety review of the diabetes drug Actos (pioglitazone), after receiving preliminary results from a long-term observational study designed to evaluate the risk of bladder cancer associated with use of this drug.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced on Sept. 17 that it has begun a safety review of the diabetes drug pioglitazone (Actos) in response to early results from a long–term study to evaluate the risk of bladder cancer associated with this drug.

Diabetes Drugs Avandia (rosiglitazone) And Actos (pioglitazone) Have Same Heart Disease And Death Risks

A new analysis of diabetes medications Avandia (rosiglitazone) and Actos (pioglitazone) revealed that the risk of heart attack and/or heart failure, or death were the same, approximately 4%. The study has been published in the latest issue of Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes , an American Heart Association journal.

Takeda Pharmacuetical Co. makes Actos, while GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) makes Avandia. (more…)
