Contest Submissions Provide New Research Avenues

A group at Harvard has set out to expand diabetes research beyond the laboratory and to solicit the ideas of citizens, according to an article from Science 20.  

The 12 winners of The Challenge contest, which was launched in February, each receive a $2,500 prize. The plan is to tap the Harvard research community to submit proposals that further some of the winning submissions.

Court Curtails Stem Cell Research

A federal court decision has blocked a White House policy allowing more embryonic stem cell research, a change that research advocates say will postpone long-awaited breakthroughs.

The ruling by chief judge Royce Lamberth of Federal District Court for the District of Columbia, granted a temporary injunction rescinding a 2009 executive order by President Obama loosening constraints on the research, saying that the president had violated (more…)

Judge Blocks Embryonic Stem-Cell Research Funding

U.S. Chief District Court Judge Royce Lamberth in Washington ruled on August 23 that federal funding for embryonic stem–cell research was barred‚ according to a law prohibiting federal funds to be used for research in which an embryo is destroyed.

In his ruling‚ the judge rejected the Obama Administration’s argument that embryonic stem–cell research itself does not cause the destruction of embryos. Stem cells derived from embryos‚ (more…)
