Type 1 Diabetic Teen Collapses, Dies on Football Field

Michael Ellsessar, a 16-year old high school student with Type 1 diabetes, died on the second play of a recent junior varsity football game. Ellsessar had caught a pass, was tackled, got up and then collapsed shortly thereafter.

EMTs standing on the sidelines, and a state trooper with medical training that was also serving as a referee at the game, rushed to Ellsessar’s aid. Emergency personnel used a portable automated external defibrillator (more…)

Brain Might Be Key To Leptin’s Actions Against Type 1 Diabetes, UT Southwestern Researchers Find

New findings by UT Southwestern Medical Center researchers suggest a novel role for the brain in mediating beneficial actions of the hormone leptin in type 1 diabetes.

FDA Unexpectedly Rejects Once-a-Week Type 2 Drug Bydureon

The FDA surprised many on Wednesday when it declined to approve Amylin Pharmaceuticals’s once-a-week Type 2 diabetes drug Bydureon, according to an article from the Associated Press. Bydureon is a newer version of twice-a-day injectable Type 2 drug Byetta.

Failure of Beta Cells in Type 2 Diabetics Happening Earlier Than Previously Thought

New research suggests that the failure of beta cells in Type 2 diabetics occurs much earlier and more swiftly than previously thought, according to an article from Diabetes in Control. Beta cells are responsible for producing insulin, the hormone responsible for regulating sugar levels in the blood.

TUESDAY, Sept. 28 (HealthDay News) — An intensive lifestyle change program helped people with type 2 diabetes lose weight and keep it off, a new study shows.
