Child’s Diabetes Risk Influenced by Dad’s Weight, Diet: Study

New research suggests a link between a child’s risk of Type 2diabetes and the weight and the amount of fat in the father’s diet at the time of conception, according to an article on DLife.

This is the first study to connect a father’s weight and diet to the offspring’s risk of metabolic disease. For the study, researchers fed male rats a diet high in fat to induce obesity and glucose intolerance. The obese rats were then mated (more…)

Exenatide Produced Modest Weight Loss in Obese Women Without Diabetes

Obese women without diabetes who used the glucagon–like peptide 1 (GLP–1) agonist exenatide (Byetta‚ Amylin) for 16 weeks lost an average 2.4 kg compared to women who took a placebo.

Researchers presented the study results at Obesity 2010. Although GLP–1 agents are associated with weight loss in patients with diabetes‚ there is little data on the drugs’ effects on weight and appetite in adults without diabetes. Dr. Jody Dushay (more…)

How People With Type 2 Diabetes Can Lose Weight, Keep It Off: Study

TUESDAY, Sept. 28 (HealthDay News) — An intensive lifestyle change program helped people with type 2 diabetes lose weight and keep it off, a new study shows.

The program also led to improved control of blood glucose levels and reduced risk factors for cardiovascular disease, both of which are critical in preventing long-term complications caused by diabetes.

More Teens Get Unapproved Weight-Loss Surgery

An increasing number of adolescents in California are undergoing gastric banding for weight loss‚ new research from the University of California‚ Los Angeles‚ shows.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has not approved gastric banding for use in individuals younger than 18 years‚ but the procedure has overtaken gastric bypass as the most frequently performed weight–loss procedure in this age group. The study looked at 590 California (more…)
